Wiki: Issue Contents Directive

Last UpdatedAlmost five hours ago

The {{IssueContents}} directive displays a publication issue's table of contents, transcribed by hand from the printed issue. Entries are grouped into sections such as features and regular departments, and the block appears under the heading In This Issue.

The directive only shows what you type. It does not build contents from the article's headings, look anything up, or link entries to other articles. Every section stays visible, and no JavaScript is needed.

Example

{{IssueContents
Group=Features |#| Featured=true
|~| Title=Wild at Heart |#| Description=The Trinity in the fall collections |#| Credit=Photographs by Steven Meisel |#| Pages=212
|~| Title=American Anthem |#| Description=Seventh Avenue's new guard |#| Credit=Photographs by Peter Lindbergh |#| Pages=230–241
|~| Group=Fashion & Beauty
|~| Title=Grunge & Glory |#| Credit=Styling by Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele
|~| Title=Bare Essentials |#| Description=The new face, with François Nars
|~| Group=Regular Features
|~| Title=Letter from the Editor |#| Credit=Anna Wintour |#| Pages=24
|~| Title=Last Look |#| Description=The back page
}}

This example is illustrative. Check every title, credit, and page number against the actual issue before publishing.

Delimiters

Place the directive on its own line. Single-line and multiline blocks both work; line breaks are treated as spaces.

Sections

Start a section with its own Group= item. Every entry that follows belongs to that section until the next Group= item.

Property Required Description
Group Yes Section title as printed, such as Features or Departments.
Featured No true or false (default false). A featured section spans the full width; other sections flow into columns where space allows.

Any section can be featured, and several can be. Section names may repeat. Sections appear in the order you write them, so put a featured section first if it should be shown first. Every section needs at least one entry.

Entries

Property Required Description
Title Yes Title as printed.
Description No Descriptive text or subtitle.
Credit No Attribution with its wording, such as Photographs by Jane Doe.
Pages No Printed page number or range, such as 42, 120–143, iv, or 12, 46–48. Shown with a p. prefix. Use the page numbers printed in the magazine, not the PDF viewer's page index.

For an issue without sections, write entries only:

{{IssueContents Title=Editor's Letter |#| Pages=3 |~| Title=Feature Story}}

Entries before the first Group= item form an unnamed, full-width list.

Rules and Troubleshooting

Transcribing with an AI Assistant

To transcribe a contents page with an AI assistant, give it a scan of the page together with this prompt:

Transcribe the magazine's table of contents into one {{IssueContents ...}} block using the authoring contract on this page. Preserve the printed titles, section names, ordering, descriptions, credits, and page labels. Use Group= items for sections and separate entries with |~|. Separate properties with |#|. Every entry needs Title; Description, Credit, and Pages are optional. Mark the main feature section Featured=true when clearly identifiable; otherwise omit that flag. Do not invent sections, attribution, page numbers, summaries, or links. Omit unknown optional fields. If a title or section is unreadable, report the uncertainty outside the block for human review rather than guessing. Use plain text without HTML or Markdown links, and close the block with }}.

Always check the result against the printed page before saving.
