Loaded is a British men's lifestyle title launched in 1994 as a monthly print magazine. Created by James Brown, Mick Bunnage and Tim Southwell, it combined irreverent humour, celebrity interviews, music, sport and photographs of scantily clad women. It became closely associated with British lad culture during the 1990s and was among the publications that established the mass-market lads’ magazine category. †1 †2

The print edition ended with the April 2015 issue. A digital version was launched later that year, and the title received another online-only relaunch as Loaded World in May 2024. †3 †4 †5

History

IPC launched Loaded in May 1994 with Brown as editor. The first issue featured Gary Oldman on its cover and used the slogan “For men who should know better”. It sold 59,400 copies, while the ninth issue took sales above 100,000. Brown left in 1997 to become editor of the British edition of GQ. †6

In October 2010, IPC Media sold Loaded to Vitality Publishing without interrupting its publishing cycle. †7 Vitality subsequently entered administration, and Paul Baxendale-Walker acquired the magazine from its administrators in 2012. Simian Publishing, established by members of the magazine's management, took control in 2013. †3

Simian announced the end of the print edition in March 2015. The final issue was dated April 2015 and was published on 26 March. †3

Color Company subsequently acquired the brand, archive and digital and social-media assets. On 11 November 2015 it launched a redesigned website under editor Aaron Tinney, leading with an interview with Colin Farrell. †4

A further online-only relaunch followed in May 2024 under the Loaded World branding. Backed by businessman Stewart Lochrie, it appointed Danni Levy as executive editor and aimed principally at readers aged between 35 and 55 who remembered the original magazine. †8 †5

Editorial profile

The original magazine covered drinking, football, music, women, comedy and popular culture in a self-deprecating, irreverent style. Its subject matter ranged from celebrity interviews and nightlife to food, television and politics. Contributors included Hunter S. Thompson, Irvine Welsh and Nick Hornby. †2

Southwell later said that the founders wanted the publication to resemble a nationally distributed fanzine with the resources of a major publisher. He described its field reporting as gonzo journalism built around writers placing themselves in unusual situations. †9

The 2015 digital edition moved away from the emphasis on scantily clad models associated with the later print magazine. Tinney described it as a continuation of the approach adopted in the final print issues, with greater emphasis on interviews and articles by experienced journalists. †10 The 2024 relaunch again made sexualized images of women part of its public positioning; Levy described the publication as occupying a middle ground between restrictions on sexual expression and online pornography. †5

Circulation

Average monthly circulation reached its peak of 457,318 during the second half of 1998. It stood at 350,040 at the beginning of 2000, fell below 200,000 in 2006 and dropped below 100,000 in 2008. In the first half of 2010, circulation was 53,591, including 38,571 full-price sales in the United Kingdom and Ireland. †6 The last reported audited figure cited when the print edition closed was approximately 35,000 copies per issue in 2011. †3

Reception and cultural context

The magazine twice received a magazine-of-the-year award and, at its height, sold more than 400,000 copies a month. BBC News described it in 2024 as both a publishing phenomenon and a cultural barometer of its period. Its sexualized photography also drew criticism alongside that directed at other lads’ magazines. †1

A 2000 study of the new men's lifestyle-magazine category examined its visual emphasis, concentration on heterosexual relationships, and use of irony and cynicism. The authors interpreted the magazines as a cultural response to social change rather than simply a backlash against feminism or harmless entertainment. †11

The 2024 revival renewed debate over the title's depiction of women. Journalist Isla Traquair argued that its nostalgic positioning risked returning to an era in which women were routinely objectified, while other commentators criticized the relaunched material and its focus on “ogling” female celebrities. †5
